So many horrible things are parading around in fancy clothes and our profession is remarkably silent. Things on this planet are at a level of a medical emergency, threatening extinction, and the medical profession is too low key. Patch wants to spark a role for our profession to sense and change. Mental illness may be a normal response to this disaster – not requiring medication, rather calling for action to create healthy contexts.
Educational Objectives:
- To describe a role people in health-related professions can play to spark change in the world.
- To name three ways to create healthy contexts to counter disaster.

Founder and Director of the Gesundheit Institute, a holistic medical community in West Virginia that has provided free medical care to thousands of patients since it began in 1971. A renowned medical doctor, social activist, professional clown, as well as the subject of the block-buster film Patch Adams, Dr. Adams is author of Gesundheit, which chronicles his ideas about the U.S. Health Care System. Having devoted his life to the study of what makes people happy, Patch Adams believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process.
